TV license in Bern definitely remains with TeleBärn

The Federal Administrative Court ruled on Wednesday that the original decision regarding the award of the regional TV license in Bern stands. The broadcaster will continue to provide regional public service programming to the population of the Bern region until at least 2034.

In January 2024, the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) re-awarded the TV license in the Bern coverage area to TeleBärn for the period 2025 to 2034. The BärnTV project lodged an appeal against this decision. In its ruling on Wednesday, the Federal Administrative Court has now definitively decided that the license for the Bern coverage area will remain with TeleBärn. Appeals are no longer possible, according to the ruling.

TeleBärn Editor-in-Chief Tobias Karlen is delighted with the final decision: "Now that the licensing procedure has been completed, we can look forward to the new licensing period from 2025 with great enthusiasm. The decision confirms that we not only fully meet the performance mandate with our program, but have also submitted the best TV concession application in the Bern region. The concession money and distribution rights are of crucial importance for the operation of regional TV stations and the fulfillment of the regional public service, including for TeleBärn."
