How the canton of Fribourg motivates young people to read newspapers

The Canton of Fribourg is launching an initiative that allows 18-year-olds to subscribe to the digital edition of a regional newspaper for free for one year. The goal is to raise young adults' awareness of regional issues and to support the regional press.

Free newspaper for young people: Young adults in the canton of Fribourg can now choose a subscription from those Fribourg regional and local press titles that appear at least once a week, as announced by the Department of Economic Affairs. The aim is to sensitize young adults to regional and cantonal issues and indirectly support the regional press titles. In line with the media habits of the young audience, digital subscriptions are preferred.

A subscription to a printed newspaper will only be granted if no digital option is available, it added. All persons who come of age in 2024 have the option of purchasing a subscription regardless of their birthday.

The achievement is a consequence of the adoption of the law on young adults' access to the media by the Grand Council in March. (jag/sda)
