Unilever renames face cream due to racism debate
In light of the global debate on racism, consumer goods giant Unilever plans to rename its «Fair & Lovely» face cream. The company announced on Thursday that its skincare products will in the future promote a more diverse ideal of beauty that embraces all skin tones.

Terms such as "white", "whitening" and "light", on the other hand, suggest a uniform ideal of beauty that the company does not consider to be correct. For this reason, these words should no longer be used in advertising, communication and the naming of Unilever creams. The name of the "Fair Lovely" cream, which is mainly sold in Asia, is to be changed within a few months.
In 2019, Unilever had already dispensed with before-and-after images and skin color gradations on the "Fair & Lovely" packaging in India. Instead, the cream was advertised as having an effect on the purity of the skin and the radiance of the face. The cream was never a whitening cream in terms of its composition, the company explained.
