Private radio stations ask Federal Council for 12 million in emergency aid
Swiss private radio stations are sounding the alarm over the coronavirus crisis. With advertising contracts being canceled at short notice, they face the threat of liquidity shortages and lost revenue. They are therefore asking the Federal Council for an immediate grant of 12 million francs.

The months of March, April and May are commercially very important for Swiss private radio stations, the Swiss Private Radio Association announced on Tuesday. During this period, numerous advertising-relevant events such as car and furniture exhibitions, spring trade fairs, tourist promotions and concerts normally take place.
Traditionally, a lot of radio advertising is booked for these. Due to the numerous cancellations, these advertising funds would now be missing for the private radio stations. These cancellations at short notice would "fundamentally" threaten the existence of private radio stations, according to the statement.
They are therefore asking the Federal Council for an immediate contribution of twelve million francs from the existing fluctuation reserve. This is already allocated to the Federal Office of Communications Bakom. According to the statement, the reserve amounts to 34 million francs for 2020.
Each broadcaster should receive an equal amount with which it can maintain its programs in accordance with the performance mandate. The regional service is of great importance to the population in the current crisis. If the crisis lasts longer, the association reserves the right to make further applications to the federal government. (SDA)
