Burger King pulls the joker

Thanks to the movie *Joker*, a staircase in New York has become a tourist hotspot. Burger King is appeasing local residents with free Whoppers—and in the process, is giving McDonald's a run for its money.

The scene is cult and is already considered part of film history: Joaquin Phoenix dances down a staircase as the "Joker". To the song "Rock and Roll Part 2" by Gary Glitter - this musical background was already critically discussed in the run-up to the film, because Glitter is known to be a convicted pedophile sex offender. However, the ex-glam rock star will not be compensated for the use of the song in the film; the rights lie with according to Guardian at the record companies Snapper Music and Universal Music - there's not a dime to be had for glitter.

The scene with the controversial soundtrack fits the gloomy, oppressive film and exerts a corresponding fascination on "Joker" fans. The staircase is not in the fantasy city of Gotham, but in the New York borough of Bronx. And immediately became a tourist magnet (more about this for example on Nzz.ch) and Instagram hotspot.

The onslaught is now gnawing at the nerves of local residents. They don't want dancing influencers, they want their peace and quiet. And maybe a free Whopper. Burger King is offering them one if they live in the district and order via Uber Eats with the code "KingStairs" (based on the hashtag #jokerstairs). Because the frustrated Bronx residents and Burger King have one thing in common: a dislike of clowns. Of course, not only the "Joker" is meant, but also the McDonald's mascot Ronald McDonald. The idea for the campaign came from the New York agency David.
