Happy Birthday, Renault Clio

To celebrate the Clio's 30th anniversary, Renault and Publicis Poke have created a wonderful online commercial for it.

No, the advertising megatrend of underlaying emotional commercials with soulful cover versions of 90s hits is not over yet. Even if it has been going on for a very long time. The reason for having even the last catchy tune sung to piano by a sensual female voice is simple: it hits the target group - the millennials with purchasing power - right in the heart. And as we all know, the heart is directly connected to the wallet.

And so Oasis' überhit "Wonderwall" gets a well-deserved revival. The anthem of all campfire romantics and flat-sharing party wannabes sounds refreshingly unspent in the version of the Renault-Clio anniversary commercial. At least to the ears of a Millennial.

In contrast to "We underlay commercials with piano remakes of 90s hits," the approach of telling a same-sex love story as an exception also seems refreshingly unused. That fits.

The only regret is that today's Clios look more like a dull cross between a VW Golf and an Opel Corsa. It almost warms your heart to see the original Clio in the film.
