Sorry, Italy!
Not for pizza purists: Subway has created a new pizza sandwich and is sending a tongue-in-cheek nod to the South.

If you want to discuss pizza, you're in the wrong place in Naples: The city, which sees itself as the home of the original pizza, leaves little room for interpretation as to what the Italian dough patty should look like. What's more, the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana was founded in Naples in 1984 as a reaction to the fast food and frozen pizza culture that was spreading around the world. It works to ensure that the tradition of Pizza Napoletana is preserved. Members - pizzerias around the world - are allowed to call their pizzas "Verace Pizza Napoletana" if they meet the association's strict guidelines and specifications. Quote Wikipedia:
According to this, the Pizza Napoletana consists of the following basic ingredients: Soft wheat flour, brewer's yeast, natural drinking water, peeled tomatoes and/or small fresh tomatoes (pomodorini), sea salt or table salt, extra virgin olive oil; other ingredients that may be used in its preparation are garlic and oregano, fresh basil and Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO or the Mozzarella TSG. S. Baking is carried out exclusively in wood-burning ovens, where a baking temperature of 485 °C is reached, which is essential for the preparation. The cooking time must not exceed 60 to 90 seconds. Typical of the Pizza napoletana is also the slightly thicker edge. It is produced in two variants:
- Pizza Marinara, with tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and oregano
- Pizza Margherita, with tomatoes, mozzarella or fior di latte, olive oil and basil.
So far, so good. Elsewhere - in the UK, for example - there is little concern for purist pizza fuss. Subway recently launched the "Pizza Sub" - a pizza-like sandwich with chicken meat and Asian Sriracha sauce. Above+Beyond's agency is celebrating the launch with a TV spot that cuts to the heart of Neapolitan pizza glory.
