Advertising for'n ass

An advertisement placed on the backsides of a women's volleyball team has caused a stir in Germany. The satirical magazine «Extra 3» has revisited the case.

The topic is not new. Already in October 2018 reported W&V about the "Prachtregion" gate. As part of an image campaign, the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen has printed the domain of the local claim "Prachtregion" on the butts of the volleyball ladies VfB Suhl Lotto Thüringen.

One wanted to "provoke something", since one presents oneself "on truly magnificent body regions", explained district administrator Peggy Geiser the campaign at that time.

Many people didn't care much for this kind of provocation and rebuked the campaign as sexist and embarrassing.

In January, official reprimands followed: The German Advertising Council objected to the campaign as "sexist and disrespectful. Peggy Geiser in turn reacted responded with incomprehension: "If every more or less hidden reference to gender-specific stimuli is branded as sexism in the future, we won't need to talk about advertising freedom in Germany. She felt the rebuke was patronizing to women because the Advertising Council argued that it was not a matter of how the volleyball players themselves felt about the advertising.

The case continues to make headlines - and is also attracting an unusual amount of attention to the region. Following articles on Spiegel.de, among others, the weekly NDR satirical magazine "Extra 3" has now also taken up the case.
