According to the study, mobile traffic will reach the following milestones worldwide in 2021:- 20 percent of all IP traffic will be mobile - compared to 8 percent in 2016.- There will be 1.5 mobile devices per capita of the global population, totaling almost 12 billion, including M2M modules - in 2016 it was still 8 billion / 1.1 per capita.- The average speed of mobile networks will increase threefold from 6.8 to 20.4 Mb/s.- M2M connections will represent 29 percent (3.3 billion) of all mobile networks - in 2016 it was 5 percent.- 4G will account for 58 percent of all mobile connections (2016: 3.3 billion) and 79 percent of all mobile connections (2016: 5 percent). M2M connections will represent 29 percent (3.3 billion) of all mobile connections - up from 5 percent in 2016.- 4G will account for 58 percent of all mobile connections (2016: 26 percent) and 79 percent of all mobile traffic.- More than half of mobile devices will be smartphones (including phablets) (6.2 billion, 2016: 3.6 billion). The explosion of mobile applications and mobile connection usage is driving the growth of 4G, which will soon be replaced by 5G. Cisco expects upscaled installations of 5G infrastructures from 2020. Mobile network operators need the high speeds, low latency and dynamic delivery capabilities of 5G networks to meet new mobile service trends and higher customer demands. Cisco predicts that 1.5 percent of all mobile data traffic will already be transmitted via 5G connections in 2021. They generate 4.7 times more traffic than average 4G connections and 10.7 times more than 3G.Western Europe: strong increase in videos in mobile data trafficIn Western Europe, mobile data traffic will increase six-fold between 2016 and 2021. This means that the volume of mobile data will grow twice as fast as that of wired fixed networks. Smartphones will be responsible for three quarters (75%) of mobile traffic in this region by the end of 2021. Currently, around 371.1 million Western Europeans (89%) have a mobile device. The slight increase to 380.7 million in five years clearly shows saturation. Each user currently generates 1.88 megabytes per month, which will rise to 9.8 megabytes per month in 2021, with an above-average increase in videos expected in Western Europe: Their share of mobile data volume will rise from 61 percent in 2016 to 80 percent in 2021. M2M data traffic will increase 12-fold in Western Europe and will then account for a tenth (11%) of mobile traffic. In five years, there will be around 160 million wearables in Western Europe, 10.5 million of which will be connected to a cell phone. "The increase in video usage on the mobile network is currently above average in Europe," says Christian Martin, General Manager Cisco Switzerland. "In addition to the popularity of platforms such as YouTube and Netflix, we see the digitalization of the working world as one of the main reasons for this increase in mobile data traffic. Videos are also playing an increasingly important role here. These developments also increase the relevance of a secure and stable network that offers sufficient capacity.Mobile data drivers worldwide: live videos, virtual and augmented reality, wearablesStrong growth in mobile live videos- Mobile videos will increase 8.7 times between 2016 and 2021 - the highest growth rate of all mobile applications - and will then represent 78 percent of all mobile traffic - Mobile live videos will increase 39 times and will already represent 5 percent of all mobile video traffic in 2021.Trend towards virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR)- The number of VR headsets will increase fivefold from 18 million in 2016 to almost 100 million in 2021 - Global VR traffic will increase 11-fold in the same period - AR traffic will grow sevenfold between 2016 and 2021Wearables drive M2M growth- From 2016 to 2021, the number of wearables worldwide will increase from 325 to 929 million - almost threefold - by which time 69 million wearables will have integrated mobile connections, compared to 11 million in 2016.Traffic offload to Wi-Fi networks- Offloading of mobile data traffic to Wi-Fi networks will increase from 60 to 63 percent from 2016 to 2021 - The number of public Wi-Fi hotspots (including homespots) will increase six-fold worldwide from 94.0 to 541.6 million over the same period - A detailed infographic on the results is available here here.
