The most popular search terms in 2016
What did the Swiss search for most frequently on google.ch in 2016? Google takes the pulse of the past year and publishes the most popular search terms in Switzerland in its "Google Year in Search 2016." The European Football Championship, a major international sporting event, was the most popular search term for the Swiss. Euro 2016 is the most popular search term in 2016 and thus recorded the strongest increase ahead of the iPhone 7 and the Pokémon Go game phenomenon, which kept Switzerland on its toes in the summer. Political topics such as Brexit and Donald Trump also attracted a great deal of interest.Brexit and Donald Trump moved the mindsA look at the "Scandals and upsets" list shows which topics moved people in Switzerland in 2016. The UK's decision to leave the EU, Brexit, recorded the largest increase in search queries, ahead of the new US president, Donald Trump. In third place was Sarah Lombardi, who was very much in the public eye at the end of the year due to her separation from Pietro Lombardi. Hillary Clinton, the failed US presidential candidate, came fourth. The decision and negotiations surrounding the enforcement initiative were the only Swiss result to land in fifth place. In the other ranks are the actress Meghan Markle, who made headlines due to her relationship with Prince Harry, and the Panama Papers scandal, in which confidential data from the law firm Mossack Fonseca was leaked to the public. In addition, the daughter of the US President-elect, Ivanka Trump, French actress Marion Cotillard and the new First Lady of the USA, Melania Trump, have triggered numerous search queries.People 2016: Tamy Glauser, Irina Beller and Gianni InfantinoOnce again this year, Google Switzerland has analyzed search queries for the most popular Swiss celebrities. In particular, personalities from the entertainment industry, sport and society are represented. At the top is Tamy Glauser, who made a name for herself not only as an androgynous model, but also through her relationship with Dominique Rinderknecht. In second place is Irina Beller, followed by the newly elected FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Other celebrities who have gained particular search interest this year are the rapper Bligg, the coach of the Swiss national team Vladimir Petkovic and the Bachelor Janosch Nietlispach. But singer Marc Amacher, who wowed the audience on The Voice of Germany, Divertimento star Jonny Fischer and Jason Brügger, who was crowned Switzerland's biggest talent in 2016, also triggered many search queries.2016 also saw the departure of big names, particularly from the music industry. It is therefore hardly surprising that two music stars are at the top of the list of deceased in 2016. David Bowie takes first place, followed by Prince. The famous actor Bud Spencer follows in third place.Swiss Hits: Tour de Suisse, Lugano and Monte TamaroAt the top of the "Swiss events" category is the Tour de Suisse 2016, a sporting event, closely followed by the Paléo Festival (which had to cede its first place from last year to the Tour de Suisse) and the Swiss Wrestling Festival. This is followed by two major events in Swiss cities, the Züri Fäscht and the Olma. In the "Cities and Villages" category, Lugano is ahead of Lausanne and Zurich. Like the city, the mountain with the highest ascent in the search queries also comes from Ticino: Monte Tamaro took first place ahead of Pilatus and Piz Bernina.Ok Google: "How does Pokémon Go work?"Voice searches via smartphone have tripled worldwide over the last two years. As a result, Google is increasingly developing into an everyday assistant that provides answers and help with everyday questions. The questions asked were evaluated and listed on Google Switzerland's "What are....?" and "How does...?" lists. In 2016, people were particularly interested in what coup plotters, Panama Papers and electoral candidates are. Current styling trends also seem to be reflected in the search queries: the question "How do I make my beard grow evenly?" was very popular with men. "How do I make a backup?" and "How do I turn dark chocolate into milk chocolate?" came in a close second. The Swiss also sought advice on one of the most popular search terms: "How does Pokémon Go work?" took first place ahead of the questions "How does the US election work?" and "How does a silencer work?"
