Share of digital donations grows by 14 percent

Just in time for the international GivingTuesday, which will also take place in Switzerland for the first time on Tuesday, November 29, the second Digital Fundraising Study Switzerland has now been published. It examines the digital donation behavior of the Swiss. In terms of total donations, the share of digital donations rose from 2.24 percent in 2014 to 2.55 percent in 2015. That is growth of 13.9 percent.

Marco Zaugg, CEO of RaiseNow, comments: "The positive trend from the previous year has been confirmed. We can again see double-digit growth in the share of digital donations, even if this does not fully meet our expectations." Looking at more than twice as many organizations as last year (20 in 2015, 13 of which were certified by the Zewo Foundation, compared to 9 organizations in 2014) has confirmed the continued low share. To calculate the digital share, the digital donation volume (just under CHF 6.7 million) of 20 Swiss aid organizations was compared to their total private donation volume (over CHF 262 million).
The second Digital Fundraising Study Switzerland confirms trends that were already indicated in the first edition of the study: Credit cards continue to be the most popular means of payment among the Swiss for online donations, and donations are made throughout the day, i.e., during work and leisure time. The weekdays with the highest average donations last year were Wednesday (130 Swiss francs) and Sunday (127 Swiss francs).

Marco Zaugg: "The biggest surprise of the 2016 Digital Fundraising Study was the confirmation of our hypothesis that online permanent donations with monthly direct debit achieve a significantly higher annual donation amount than annually recurring donations." In short, those who want to help their favorite organization most effectively should donate a monthly amount.

More than 15 key figures show how the Swiss donate digitally in the Digital Fundraising Study Switzerland 2016. The statements are based on the analysis of transactions processed by over 100 organizations via RaiseNow donation solutions. Almost 120,000 donations with a volume of over 12.5 million Swiss francs from 2015 were evaluated.
