Blick online portal with the best mobile performance

The online portal of Blick impresses with strong performance in terms of mobile access. The performance marketing agency MSO Digital tested 41 of the regional daily newspapers in Germany (20), Austria (12) and Switzerland (9) with the highest reach in terms of unique users for mobile performance. This key figure of a website is decisive for its user-friendliness. Particularly in the case of daily media, the news on another portal is only a click away if it takes too long to call up an article.Page speed is not in the optimumThe evaluation of the top 20 regional daily media in Germany revealed an average Google Page Speed of 53 points for the mobile start page. Better values of 60 or more were achieved by only six of the 20 German media studied. For the twelve regional newspapers studied in Austria, the mobile page speed averages 55, with only four media reaching the optimum. The Swiss counterparts score 56 points for page speed. Four out of nine achieve values equal to or greater than 60. In terms of the errors identified that have a negative impact on page speed, the media mainly have to contend with technical aspects, such as deficiencies in image compressions, caching or source code.

Of the nine portals tested in Switzerland, Blick performs best, followed by NZZ and St. Galler Tagblatt. The Baz and Südostschweiz, on the other hand, deliver a weak performance.Only one third use Google Accelerated Mobile PagesGoogle is particularly committed to making websites load faster on mobile devices, and to that end opened Google Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) to all publishers in April of this year. With AMP, users can see the content of the website after just milliseconds. Currently, only one-third of regional dailies in the DACH region use Google AMP.Out of 20 regional German dailies, only six use AMP technology, in Austria it is four out of twelve, and among Swiss media three out of nine. What is striking here is that the pioneers are not always the regional daily newspaper presences with the greatest online reach. Smaller regional media in the DACH region are also already experimenting with AMP.At the moment, Accelerated Mobile Pages are displayed in mobile search on current topics preferably above the normal organic search results in a carousel. They are marked with the abbreviation AMP and a lightning bolt icon.Shahab Hosseiny, CEO, MSO Digital: "Publishers should take advantage of the short period of time in which the competition has not yet tried out technical innovations. AMP will definitely become more important for news sites because they are expected to be included in normal Google search results in the future. By the end of the year, AMP will become mandatory."About the analysis:Google's PageSpeed Insights measure the performance of a page on mobile devices and desktop computers. The PageSpeed score can range from 0 to 100 points. AMP were tested with AMP Validator.
