M&C Saatchi brings a piece of Italy to the Moroccan desert
M&C Saatchi and BMW recreated the Monza racetrack in the Sahara. The bottom line: Driving the new X5 on sand feels just like driving a sports car on a racetrack.

Opened in 1922, the almost six-kilometer circuit north of Milan is one of the motorsport classics par excellence. The Italian Grand Prix has been held in Monza since 1950. With its straights, the circuit offers the fastest sections of the Formula 1 circuit - Kimi Räikkönen reached over 370 km/h in 2005 and still holds the speed record today.
It took 50 people two weeks to dig the legendary curves of the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza into the Moroccan desert sand. The result is an exact copy, including identical radii of curvature and distances.
The stunt demonstrates what many SUVs, which in reality are mostly used as lifestyle vehicles spoiled by the road, are only too happy to remind us: they can also do things differently, they can also go off-road. Even if most drivers will never leave the clean road. (hae)
