Poster campaign "Zurich - Black on White" is an exhibition in public space

For a few days now, posters with historical city scenes have been adorning the city of Zurich. Each of the subjects is different. They are the result of a collaboration between APG|SGA, the City of Zurich and Photobastei.

While the APG|SGA provides over 200 locations throughout the city, the Architectural History Archive of the City of Zurich provides the content for some of them with pinpoint accuracy and location for the individual poster site. The posters depict Zurich scenes between 1890 and 1920 and advertise the exhibition "Zurich - Black on White" at the Photobastei. It shows a selection of historical photographs from the holdings of the City of Zurich's Architectural History Archive. From September 6 to October 28, over 140 images from all of the city's districts will be on display at the Photobastei. The photographs date from 1890 to 1920 and show city views and buildings, picturesque landscapes and images of village and urban life. The exhibition will be opened on Thursday, September 6, 2018, by City Councillor André Odermatt.

But the posters not only have the function of advertising the exhibition: they are condensed into an exhibition in public space.

The initiators are taking advantage of the fact that hardly any other photographic genre captivates viewers as much as historical urban photography. Especially when it is about their own city, their own neighborhood. The images of yesterday inevitably lead to a comparison with the present. Acquired knowledge about the city of the past merges with personal memories of certain places today.
