One of the main reasons for the changeover was the poor sales figures. This is what the former CEO of The Collection, Thomas Trüb, told Medienwoche.ch. At the launch of the magazine, Trüb was still confident. He said as recently as April that he wanted to launch more topics on a regular basis.
Ringier launches monothematic tablet magazine
The two monothematic magazines appeared on the theme of "Royal Wedding" and the "Global Baby".
Ringier: Second issue of The Collection published
But the recipe for success of elaborate journalism did not work, at least not for this iPad magazine. The Collection did not sell as well as expected, says Trüb in an interview with Medienwoche. In addition, the marketing effort to boost sales would have been too great. So Ringier decided to adjust its business model and say goodbye to user financing. Now Ringier wants to have its independent publishing apps financed by partners and sponsors. However, this does not apply to the apps of existing newspapers and magazines. Readers will continue to pay for these as well. Ringier will do without an editor-in-chief for the future development of apps. Instead, project teams will work under temporary management.
It is surprising that Ringier is abandoning the project after just two issues. According to Medienwoche, Ringier is not only prepared to take risks, but also to react quickly if the project fails. They have clearly learned that the end consumer is no longer willing to pay for content. Whether this is true, or whether the end consumer was simply not impressed by the choice of topics, is difficult to say in this case, after just two issues.
