Four times a year, Südostbahn's customer magazine "Essenz" inspires travelers with ideas for journeys of discovery through Switzerland: diverse, surprising and with attention to detail. The magazine has now been honored with the German Design Award for excellent communication design. The magazine is available free of charge on all Südostbahn long-distance and regional trains. It is also available at selected SOB and SBB stations and from tourist partners.
"Essenz underlines the quality of our travel experience in the Traverso," says Reto Ebnöther, Head of Marketing and Sales at Südostbahn. In its appraisal, the jury wrote: "With its clear, charismatic design, 'Essenz' invites you to discover Switzerland from new perspectives." Interplaying content, expressive images and consistent language convey curiosity and a desire to travel. "The careful selection of topics and the harmonious combination of information and inspiration make this magazine an impressive role model for contemporary editorial communication at the highest level."
"The essence combines thematic journeys of discovery through Switzerland with the bookable travel offers of Südostbahn and thus inspires customers to plan excursions with the long-distance and suburban railroad lines of Südostbahn," emphasizes editorial manager Semra Yavuz.
The St. Gallen communications agency Sags is responsible for the design and co-editing of the magazine. "Curiosity is the essence of travel. It drives us in the editorial and design department along the four seasons to satisfy our own curiosity and pass on our discoveries to the travelers of the Südostbahn," says Robert Diener, founder and owner of Sags.
The cover image by artist Iuna Tinta (Corinne Weidmann) also contributes to the high recognition of the essence. In terms of design, the artist draws on the traditional travel posters that were ubiquitous in the first half of the 20th century and stages the Südostbahn trains in the scenic landscapes of Switzerland.
Responsible at Schweizerische Südostbahn: Reto Ebnöther (Head of Marketing and Sales), Semra Yavuz (Editorial Manager and Head of Marketing Services), Conradin Knabenhans (Head of Product Management). Farner Consulting is one of the largest communications consulting agencies in Switzerland. Founded in 1951, the agency now has over 200 employees in Zurich, Berne, St. Gallen, Lausanne, Basel and Chiasso.

Every year, the German Design Award honors innovative and groundbreaking communication design. It is one of the most recognized design competitions in the world and enjoys a high reputation far beyond specialist circles. The award honors the commitment of companies and designers for particularly successful design solutions.
vonSalis brand identity
As vonSalis operates under the same name as both a wine merchant and a winemaker, the positioning both internally and externally was unclear. The aim of the rebranding was to bring clarity to the communication. In order for both senders to exploit their full potential, the communication situations must be differentiated: Either the wine merchant is speaking or the winemaker and their own wines. This idea also manifests itself in the design.
Depending on the situation, the dynamic logo is either a symbol or a flexible stage. Stories, products and messages about wine play out on this stage. The result is a lively appearance that is entirely in keeping with the spirit of the new brand. VonSalis acts as a trailblazer, partner and expert, opening up access to wine and making it uncomplicated. "The focus is on wine" is also the claim.
LMVZ brand identity
Lehrmittelverlag Zürich (LMVZ) has not pursued a conscious brand strategy in recent years. The company was sure of its orders from the canton. In the meantime, the market environment has changed and become more competitive. As part of its strategic realignment, the LMVZ must and wants to be more active and needs-oriented. To achieve this, the publishing house needs a strong brand and its own brand strategy.
The modular design and the characteristic design elements are also effective in moving communication. The logo lettering with the horizontal lines is reminiscent of a bookshelf or the measuring units of a scale. On the one hand, this creates a link to the core business of textbooks, while the measuring units also symbolize the growth of learners in a metaphorical sense.
vonSalis wine bottles
In Maienfeld, Jenins, Malans and Zizers, there are always very characteristic decorations on both historic and newer buildings. They are called sgraffiti and are part of the regional building culture. The motifs decorating portals, windows and gables are mostly abstract.

A characteristic sgraffito motif was identified for each of the four wine regions and used as a differentiating basic component for the design. The coding for the individual wine types and price categories results in simple, authentic graphic compositions.
The expert jury awarded Aroma's "Gottardo 2016" exhibition the German Design Award Winner in the "Fair and Exhibition" category. The German Design Award is the international premium prize awarded by the German Design Council with the aim of discovering, presenting and honoring unique design trends.
The interactive, mobile exhibition "Gottardo 2016" conveyed the significance of the 57-kilometre Gotthard Base Tunnel to the public at over 15 exhibition locations in Switzerland and abroad. The huge "Supersign" - a tunnel cross-section in its original format and 10 meters high - and five themed modules were staged in an interactive and exciting way.
The jury justified the award as follows: The roadshow with its spectacular 1:1 tunnel cross-section, cleanly designed in terms of form and content, attracted a great deal of attention and communicated the major project cross-media, with information and visual stimuli interacting perfectly.
With the "Gottardo 2016" project, Aroma has already received the silver apple in the "Best Thematic Exhibition" category (Werbewoche reported).

Switzerland's third-largest energy supplier is transforming itself from a state-owned electricity provider into a customer-oriented energy service provider. The new BKW stands for less complexity, more emotions and clear, direct communication at eye level. Strong colors bring life into a very technical world. Complex things are explained with clear illustrations. A unique pictogram style is complemented by hand sketches that make information understandable in a very individual way.

German Design Award for Marché Mövenpick
At the award ceremony in Frankfurt, Process and Marché International accepted the "Special Mention" of the German Design Award (see picture and caption). According to the jury, Marché Mövenpick is "A contemporary gastro concept that expresses simplicity and a rural way of life with its formal-puristic brand design and is thus in line with the contemporary trend of an urban lifestyle."

The Marché Mövenpick brand stands for enjoyment and sophistication. Thus, in the positioning, Marché values such as healthy, market-fresh food were supplemented with parts of the Mövenpick philosophy and transferred into a striking appearance. The formal reduction of the logo, the clear typography and the emblematic illustrations by the Swede Klas Herbert characterize the design.

Hofer used an unusual acquisition mailing to encourage companies to build a mini-eco power plant, thus drawing their attention to Energie Wasser Bern's offer and inviting them to the energy center (Werbewoche.ch reported).

When the local mountain Niesen becomes a pyramid: For the Thunerseespiele, Hofer let Egypt and the landscape around the lake go hand in hand and made it the perfect backdrop for the dramatic love triangle of this year's musical Aida.

The award ceremony will take place in Frankfurt in March 2015.
The German Design Award aims to discover, present and award unique design trends. The prize is awarded annually by the German Design Council and honors first-class and groundbreaking products, projects and personalities of the international design landscape. The "Special Mention" is awarded to those works that attract attention with particularly successful partial aspects or solutions.
Work by Komet has already been nominated for the Design Award four times in recent years, and the newspaper zur Soirée graphique N°4 has already received a Special Mention. With the renewed award of a Special Mention to the magazine zur Soirée graphique N°6, the agency has now been able to bring one of the coveted awards to Bern for the second time. The publication was already awarded silver (design) and bronze (photography) by ADC Switzerland at the beginning of the year.

The nomination followed KSB Krieg Schlupp Bürge winning a Reddot Design Award in 2012 for its design work.
